Malarplasty (cheek bone reduction surgery) is a cosmetic surgical procedure to reduce the width of the mid face. It is also called malar reduction surgery or zygomatic reduction surgery.
Your surgeon will examine you clinically and radiographically. A Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) is taken to examine your facial skeleton three dimensionally. Surgery is then planned using the scans.
Malarplasty is performed under general anesthesia. During the surgery, the preplanned bone cuts are made on the zygomatic prominence and a strip of bone is removed via the oral cavity. Another small incision is made in the side burn area and another preplanned bone cut is made on the zygomatic arch).
This allows the malar to be moved inwards resulting in a narrower mid-facial width. The mobilized malar is then fixated with titanium plates and screws to ensure stability.
Antibiotics, analgesics, an antibiotic ointment for the sideburn incision and a mouth wash will be prescribed. The patient is placed on soft diet. Swelling and bruising are a normal consequence of the surgery. The sutures at the sideburn area are removed in 5-7 days.
